Become a Community Garden Intern!

The Resource Conservation District is seeking a Community Garden Intern! The Tijuana River Valley Community Garden contains 210 garden plots and nine quarter acre farm plots rented out to individuals, one quarter acre plot farmed by the RCD, and a native plant hedgerow. We are seeking an intern to assist our garden manager with planting, weeding, and other garden maintenance tasks. The internship will focus on the following activities, with the potential to work on other RCD programs:

  • Assisting with faming tasks, such as planting, wedding, and harvesting, on the RCD farm plot.
  • Hedgerow maintenance, including planting, weeding, installing/repairing irrigation, to help this native plant wildlife habitat thrive.
  • Community garden support, including assisting the garden manager with weeding, mowing, repairs, and/or garden plot inspections as needed.

Eligibility: We are looking for an intern with an active interest in environmental conservation and farming or gardening. Previous experience is not required and training will be provided.

Requirements: Must possess a current, valid California driver’s license, current proof of automobile insurance coverage, and reliable transportation; punctuality and reliability, and availability to work occasional weekends or evenings. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is beneficial but not required.

Start date: as soon as possible to assist with spring gardening tasks.
Schedule: working days are Monday – Thursday between 8:00 and 4:30. We are seeking an intern that can commit to working at least two days per week.

Location: The position will be based at the Tijuana River Valley Community Garden, 2100 Hollister Street, San Diego 92154.

Terms: the internship is offered on a part-time basis, unpaid, up to 20 hours per week, with an option of work in exchange for course credit. A $500 stipend is offered on completion of a three month internship.
